ivtreatreg: a new STATA routine for estimating binary treatment models with heterogeneous response to treatment under observable and unobservable selection

چکیده
This paper presents a new user-written STATA command called ivtreatreg for the estimation of five different (binary) treatment models with and without idiosyncratic (or heterogeneous) average treatment effect. Depending on the model specified by the user, ivtreatreg provides consistent estimation of average treatment effects both under the hypothesis of “selection on observables” and “selection on unobservables” by using Ordinary Least Squares (OLS) regression in the first case, and IntrumentalVariables (IV) and Selection-model (à la Heckman) in the second one. Conditional on a pre-specified subset of exogenous variables x – thought of as driving the heterogeneous response to treatment – ivtreatreg calculates for each model the Average Treatment Effect (ATE), the Average Treatment Effect on Treated (ATET) and the Average Treatment Effect on Non-Treated (ATENT), as well as the estimates of these parameters conditional on the observable factors x, i.e., ATE(x), ATET(x) and ATENT(x). The five models estimated by ivtreatreg are: Cf-ols (Control-function regression estimated by OLS), Direct-2sls (IV regression estimated by direct two-stage least squares), Probit-2sls (IV regression estimated by Probit and two-stage least squares), Probit-ols (IV two-step regression estimated by Probit and ordinary least squares), and Heckit (Heckman two-step selection model). An extensive treatment of the conditions under which previous methods provide consistent estimation of ATE, ATET and ATENT can be found, for instance, in Wooldgrige (2002, Chapter 18). The value added of this new STATA command is that it allows for a generalization of the regression approach typically employed in standard program evaluation, by assuming heterogeneous response to treatment.

Estimating a dose-response function with heterogeneous response to confounders when treatment is continuous and endogenous
Background: This paper presents an original econometric model for estimating a dose-response function when: treatment is continuous but with a “spike” at zero; individuals may react heterogeneously to observable confounders; and selection-into-treatment may be endogenous. Objective: The goal is to provide program evaluators with a model able to enlarge the set of program evaluation methods to u...

Hepatitis C virus infection is affecting an estimated 200 million people worldwide and 210 thousand in Iran. It is a major cause of morbidity and mortality from liver disease. Interferon-alpha is the choice of treatment but interferone (IFN) with ribavirin is known more effective recently. This study evaluated effect of IFN on Iranian patients and predict response to therapy. This i...

When a binary or ordinal regression model incorrectly assumes that error variances are the same for all cases, the standard errors are wrong and (unlike OLS regression) the parameter estimates are biased. Heterogeneous choice (also known as location-scale or heteroskedastic ordered) models explicitly specify the determinants of heteroskedasticity in an attempt to correct for it. Such models are...
متن کاملBinary Regression With a Misclassified Response Variable in Diabetes Data
Objectives: The categorical data analysis is very important in statistics and medical sciences. When the binary response variable is misclassified, the results of fitting the model will be biased in estimating adjusted odds ratios. The present study aimed to use a method to detect and correct misclassification error in the response variable of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (T2DM), applying binary ...

The discovery of conjunctive causes--factors that act in concert to produce or prevent an effect--has been explained by purely covariational theories. Such theories assume that concomitant variations in observable events directly license causal inferences, without postulating the existence of unobservable causal relations. This article discusses problems with these theories, proposes a causal-p...
